LEIA SQUILLACE is a freelance director and devised theatre artist. She primarily directs new works by female playwrights, particularly those with themes addressing sexual identity and gender. She rejects the notion that action and conversation should only happen on stage and is constantly exploring ways to involve audiences in performance. Leia’s work includes the development of new plays such as Good Kids (Naomi Iizuka) and the Kennedy Center National Undergraduate Playwriting Award winner, Fair (Karly Thomas). Most recently, she co-developed I Killed the Cow for the United Solo Festival at Theatre Row.
Leia is also dedicated to exploring alternative applications of theatre for sexual education and gender activism. She has worked with the University of Michigan’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center to train students in peer facilitation with the use of theatrical techniques and developed their Bystander Intervention Interactive Workshop which utilizes forum theatre to teach effective intervention strategies. |
