LAURA MARIA CENSABELLA’s Ensemble Studio Theatre/Alfred P. Sloan commissioned play Paradise recently completed a sold-out run at The Odyssey Theatre in LA (Viola Davis and Julius Tennon, producers) and she has written the screenplay for American Oasis Films. It premiered at Underground Railway/Central Square Theater in Cambridge (IRNE Award Best New Play) and has since been co-produced at Passage Theatre and Luna Stage.
Recent honors include the $10,000 ADAA William Saroyan Human Rights/Social Justice Drama Award for her play Carla Cooks The War. Other plays/musicals have been produced/developed at the O’Neill Playwrights Conference, Philadelphia Festival Theatre for New Plays, the Women’s Project and Productions, Ensemble Studio Theatre (where she is an artist-member), Portland Stage Company, The New Harmony Project, The Working Theatre, and Urban Stages, among others. She has received three grants in Playwriting and Screenwriting from the New York Foundation for the Arts, and has won two daytime television Emmy Awards. Her short film Last Call is available on Netflix. She directs the Ensemble Studio Theatre Playwrights Unit, teaches at the New School for Drama (where she won the Distinguished University Wide Teaching Award), and graduated from Yale University. Laura is pleased to have received a new commission from EST/Sloan for another science-based play.
